Fantastic Flickr Photographers
This PC World slideshow features the work of some of Flickr’s best photographers, with an emphasis on the way Flickr groups encourage experimentation and appreciation of different photographic styles and techniques : Fake Tilt Shift (represented by the photograph at the left by paper_scissors), Underwater Portraiture, Natural Abstractions, Insect Macros, High Speed Photography, HDR, the Holga and other plastic toy cameras, and more.

It’s an interesting selection of styles and some beautiful photographs, but it must have been difficult to choose — there’s so much interesting activity happening in Flickr groups.

Here are some of my favorite groups :

Jumping Project
There’s just something fresh and funny about photographs of people jumping, caught at the moment when their feet are off the ground. This group is for photographs of people jumping for the sake of jumping — no sports pictures, bungee jumping, diving, parachuting, etc. The pioneer of the jumping portrait, Philippe Halsman, is the model for the group.

This photograph of a bride and groom jumping for joy on the Great Wall of China is called Not something you see every day! by the photographer known as Today is a Good Day.

Day 285 : October 11, 2008Squared Circle
Over 80,000 “squircles” — perfect circles enclosing perfect circles. Lots of bottle caps, pies, manhole covers, plates of food, portholes and much more. All the contributions to this group are required to have a Creative Commons license allowing for derivative works — squircles are great for making mosaics.

Chair RepairLeague of the Empty Chair
Pictures of chairs that are empty and interestingly out of place. “The key is the emptiness/ unhomeliness/ unheimlichkeit/ lack of belonging/ uncanniness that the chair represents.”

Coca Cola Ghost SignGhost Signs
This group collects photographs of faded old advertising signs painted on buildings

The Old Pontiac at NightFin and Fender
This group is for artistic close-ups of vintage automobiles, photographs that are simple, iconic and graphic. The description says “This is a curated group… in a perpetual state of revision and refinement.”

Cocktail Umbrella at NightCocktail Parasols
I have always loved these festive little umbrellas, so I started this group to collect photographs of them. Sad to say, nearly everyone’s pictures of these are more creative than mine. I especially like this one by sufw.
