Receiving Tomb at Forest Hills Cemetery

The Gothic Revival Receiving Tomb, near the gate to the cemetery, was designed by William Ralph Emerson and Carl Fehmer and built in 1871. Receiving tombs are used as a place to store bodies in coffins after the funeral and before burial. They are often found in older New England cemeteries because before modern digging equipment, bodies couldn’t be buried in frozen ground.
